After helping Herm into the house, Noah retreated to the room he’d claimed. It was smaller than the other one, and didn’t have an attached bathroom, but he figured Herm would like the larger bed, where he would have a better chance at getting comfortable. As he lay back on the pillow and his mind started replaying the past day and a half, he remembered Aedan’s comment about there being weapons in the house.

Not bothering to get dressed, Noah got up and searched the place so he’d know where and what was available if he needed something. He found a pair of shotguns in the hall closet. There was also a box of shells. Noah had fired a rifle before, but not a shotgun. His father had taken him deer hunting several times. To his otter nature, deer hunting with a rifle wasn’t as interesting or fun as chasing salmon in otter form and ripping them apart with his teeth.

Something crashed through the large bay window in the living room that looked down on the creek. Noah grabbed one of the rifles and fumbled with the box of shells.

“What in the hell are you doing out there, boy?” Herm shouted from the larger bedroom.

“It wasn’t me!” Noah yelled back as he managed to get two shells into the shotgun.

The smell of orca hit Noah, and he brought the shotgun up to his shoulder. The hall was short, only about ten feet long.

“Then what the fuck is going on here?” Herm appeared in the doorway of his bedroom, leaning heavily on his crutch.

“Putting a stop to you whale lovers before you smear our names,” a deep voice rumbled as a large man stepped into the hallway.

He was wide, nearly as wide as the hall, but like Neela, didn’t appear fat—it was all muscle and raw power. He was nearly seven feet tall.

“Shit!” Noah scrambled backward as he fired the shotgun.

“Damn it!” the man roared and charged them. “That stings.”

Noah shoved Herm back into the room and slammed the door shut behind them. He took a second to flip the lock on the soft metal handle.

The orca hitting the door shook the small house. Somehow the door held.

“What do we do now?” Noah asked as he glanced about for shotgun shells. He realized he’d dropped the box in the hallway when he’d dove to get Herm into the room.

In the pale moonlight coming through the small window to the right of the bed, Herm looked shaken. “If I could shift and run I’d say make it to the outlet and head upstream. You said it was shallow. That helps us, but not them.”

“But you can’t, and we’ve got angry orcas in the house.” Not remembering if he’d fired both barrels or just one, Noah popped the gun open and saw they had one more shot.

The orca outside the door hit it again. The building shook another time, and the sound of wood cracking rang out in the bedroom.

“Can you hit him with that?” Herm pointed to the gun.
